Environmental Health Specialist

Position Overview

Central Valley Health District is seeking a dedicated Environmental Health Specialist to support and carry out environmental health programs that protect and promote the health of our communities. This position plays a vital role in ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations through inspections, complaint investigations, enforcement activities, and technical assistance to regulated entities and the general public.

The Environmental Health Specialist works both independently and as part of a collaborative public health team, applying sound judgment, ethical practice, and evidence-based public health principles. This role requires adaptability to emerging public health issues, strong communication skills, and a commitment to serving diverse populations with professionalism and respect.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct environmental health inspections and investigations
  • Enforce applicable federal, state, and local health and safety codes
  • Respond to and investigate complaints related to environmental health concerns
  • Provide education and technical assistance to businesses, partners, and the public
  • Maintain accurate documentation and comply with regulatory and professional standards

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental health or a related physical, chemical, or biological science (minimum of 30 semester credits in a science field required)
  • Current North Dakota Environmental Health Practitioner license or ability to obtain upon hire
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel within the CVHD service area
  • Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills

Work Environment

This position is primarily office-based with regular fieldwork throughout the district’s service area, including inspections conducted in a variety of environmental and weather conditions. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required. Travel within Barnes, Dickey, Foster, LaMoure, Logan, McIntosh, Stutsman, and Wells counties is expected.
